From Carly Furman, teacher, at West Deptford Twp. SD:
Hello,
Are there going to be revised Final Project Organizers for second grade? I am finding that my second grade students are really struggling with them due to the following:
1. Vocabulary (Academic vocabulary is highly above where they are at independently in reading and writing. Thus, they are unable to complete the organizers with independence. This is a huge struggle for 1 teacher trying to service and assisst a classroom who all have research being done on many different self selected topics.
2. I am requesting kid friendly spacing/ less information. In my opinion, too much information is being presented in a small space. The amount of information without picture support is overhwelming to ELL's, students with learning needs, and any student who is not reading on grade level. The kids struggle immenseley to independently read and comprehend what is being asked of them even after teacher modeled/guided. They can not fit in all they need to write in the tiny boxes provided.
FPO #1 for Jobs In My community where the students draw/label a diagram of their community helper and tools they use is the ONLY final project organizer that I have not had to personally modify for my students to have success. I fear that modification that deviates too far from the core interferes with the validity of the curriculum.
That is why I am hoping that ARC will come out with revised organizers with examples. Please let me know if this is in the works in the future, I know this is a common complaint amongst my colleagues.
